Buy a dedicated macro lens for repeatable high-quality work and better control of working distance. Choose a good achromatic close-up lens when portability, cost and occasional use matter more than edge-to-edge performance.
What each option changes
A macro lens is designed to focus much closer than a conventional lens and states its maximum reproduction ratio, often 1:1. A close-up filter is an additional positive lens that screws onto the front of an existing lens, shortening its focusing range so nearby subjects become accessible.
Close-up lenses are commonly rated in dioptres. Their effect depends on the host lens, and stronger single-element filters tend to introduce more softness and colour fringing toward the edges. Better achromatic designs use paired elements to control these aberrations more effectively.
Image quality and working distance
A dedicated macro lens normally gives the most consistent sharpness, flatter focus field and predictable magnification. Longer macro focal lengths often leave more space between lens and subject, helping with lighting and insects, although the complete lens becomes larger and more expensive.
A close-up lens can be surprisingly effective on a compatible telephoto zoom and packs into a small case. The trade-off is a restricted focus range: infinity focus is lost while it is attached, working distance becomes constrained and results depend heavily on the filter and host lens combination.
Choose for the way you shoot
For insects, archival copying, focus stacking or frequent product work, a true macro lens is the safer long-term purchase. For holidays, experimentation or an occasional flower detail, an achromatic close-up lens can be an economical introduction. Check thread size, step-ring compatibility and the risk of vignetting before buying.
