Focal length and sensor size determine angle of view; camera position determines perspective. Calculate both coverage and distance before buying a lens for a fixed space.
Angle and coverage are related, but different
Angle of view describes the cone the camera sees. Subject coverage translates that angle into a width and height at a chosen distance. A lens can have the correct angle yet still be impractical if the room does not let you move far enough back to cover the subject.
The calculator uses a rectilinear-lens model and the active sensor dimensions. Real lenses may breathe while focusing, apply digital distortion correction or use a cropped video mode, so manufacturer specifications and a physical test remain valuable for tight installations.
Perspective comes from position
Changing focal length while standing still changes framing. Moving the camera changes the relative size of near and far objects, which is the perspective effect often attributed to lenses. For a headshot, decide the facial perspective by choosing camera distance first, then select a focal length that frames the subject from there.
