Crop factor compares framing. It does not physically change a lens, gather extra light or multiply focal length.

A comparison language, not a lens transformation

Crop factor describes the diagonal size of one sensor relative to the 36 × 24 mm full-frame reference. Mount a 35 mm lens on a 1.5× APS-C camera and its framing resembles a 52.5 mm lens on full frame from the same position. The lens remains 35 mm; the smaller sensor records a narrower portion of its image circle.

This makes equivalent focal length useful when matching compositions across formats. It does not mean the lens gains magnification, sharpness or light. Exposure at f/2.8 and the same shutter speed and ISO remains f/2.8 on either sensor, assuming comparable transmission.

Why equivalent aperture appears in comparisons

If two cameras are positioned to create the same framing and are compared at an equivalent angle of view, multiplying the f-number by crop factor approximates the full-frame aperture that gives similar depth of field. A 35 mm f/2 lens on 1.5× APS-C therefore compares roughly with a 52.5 mm f/3 full-frame setup for framing and depth of field.

That equivalence does not alter the exposure settings shown by the smaller-format camera. It is a way to compare the final image geometry and total-light context, not an instruction to enter a different aperture into the camera.
